Chinese tech firm Baidu launched its self-driving taxi service in the city of Shenzhen, marking the company's first deployment of self-driving vehicles in a densely populated area of China. And while human drivers still sit in the back as a safety precaution, that may change in the future as technology advances.
The autonomous driving (AD) unit of Baidu, has been granted five licenses by authorities in Beijing to test five self-driving cars in designated areas within the Chinese capital, without on- On board safety driver.
Baidu has already set up 50 pick-up points and drop-off stations in Shenzhen, a city of 13 million people, and according to a new report by state media outlet China Daily, self-driving via a smartphone application that is called Apollo Go. Taxis can be called.
Beijing allowed the first self-driving taxis to hit the streets in November, in what were designated "pilot areas". Where vehicles can be tested by companies that have received regulatory approval. But Baidu isn't the only self-driving vehicle company offering taxi services in China. Companies DeepRoute, Pony.ai, and AutoX have also begun testing their own robot taxi rides.
Shenzhen is the seventh city of the world in which Baidu has launched its self-driving car services in China and the company has set an effect goal of expending Apollo Go operations to 65 cities nationwide by 2025 and 100 cities by 2030.

The new licenses were awarded by Beijing's joint regulatory body in charge of AD testing, which includes the city's transportation and public security bureaus.
